It had been four days and he hadn’t seen or heard much of Mila. Work had kept him busy and it was late when he got home. The concept that he might have frightened her off was foremost in his mind. Had he fucked things up again? Tomorrow was the grand opening so she would be working late tonight. Maybe she would still be at the shop when he got home.

This time he was lucky. The lights were on in the shop, but she wasn’t alone. Her family and even his mother were there. Brett was filthy from work so made his way to the apartment to have a shower.

He wanted to have more times with just him, Matteo, and Mila, but there was fat chance of that right then, and maybe she didn’t want it anyway. He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his middle. He would dress and go down and meet the DeMarco family again.

As he walked out, and heard female voices. His mother was one and the other, Mila. He had wanted her to see him half-naked or even completely naked again, but not with his mother in the room.

“Hi, Mom, Mila. What’s going on?”

His mother smiled as she held one of his saucepans.

Then Mila turned around, her mouth hanging open. She stared at his face but her gaze travelled over his chest to the towel. She bit her bottom lip and then peered back up at him. Her face went pink all the way down her neck and he loved it. Thank God he didn’t have an erection right now.

“I’m so sorry. Your mother said you were at work still and she had the key. We needed a few extra utensils.”

“It’s fine. My mother tends to not have boundaries where her kids are concerned. I’ll get dressed and come and help.”

“Oh, you’re fine. You have a towel on,” his mother said as she wandered past him.

Mila might not have called him for days but he needed to get over himself. She had been busy. He hadn’t been the center of her universe. From the way she looked at his towel and what was hidden beneath, he considered he was still in with a chance.

He got dressed but when he walked back out, the room was empty. A part of him had wished his mother had disappeared and he could make Mila blush again.

He headed downstairs. The shop looked fantastic with the tables and chairs set up and the pictures and mirrors on the walls. Mila had a great eye for making the place a bit different and unique. Over the years, he’d mostly focused on how women appeared physically. He’d not spent enough time with women to find out about their goals and what they loved to do with their lives. Brett still considered himself a good guy and he had never hurt someone intentionally as far as he could remember.

His mother was in a deep conversation with Mila’s mom, but he’d not escaped her notice.
